Romantic, Rock-star rowdy

  • The Caveman Room at Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo, Calif. With its natural rock floors, walls and ceilings and in-room waterfall, this he-man haven is the hands-down favorite at the 42-year-old inn midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. There's even a rock shower and stone basin in the bathroom
  • The Italian Gondola Suite at The Anniversary Inn, Salt Lake City. You and your loved one sleep in a gondola and enjoy an oversize ''Mediterranean'' bathtub. Big spenders who have a yearning for the simple life, there's Swiss Family Robinson Suite, where you bunk in a tree. Romantics can ponder the wherefores of their unions in the Romeo and Juliet Suite, complete with in-room balcony.
  • Cinema Suites at Holiday Inn Family Suites Resort at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. A 60-inch TV, surround-sound stereo system and dual recliners in a separate home-theater room are the stars at this new theme resort near Disney World
  • The CanCan Room at Forget-Me-Not Lodge & Aurora-Express Fairbanks, Alaska. Guests sleep in restored Alaska Railroad cars decorated in late-1800s themes. The red-and-gold CanCan room, decked with period knickknacks.
  • The Edgar Allan Poe room at Sylvia Beach Hotel, Nye Beach, Ore. There's a pendulum over the bed and a stuffed raven in this blood- red-and-ebony hideaway. Other rooms in this literary- themed bed-and-breakfast on a cliff overlooking the ocean about 100 miles south of Portland evoke authors including Jane Austen, Mark Twain and Alice Walker. TVs, radios or phones are absent from rooms, but there are lots of books. The B&B is named for Sylvia Beach, who ran the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore in Paris and befriended Ernest Hemingway.
  • An African Safari Tent at Safari West Wildlife Preserve and Tent Camp, Santa Rosa, Calif. Can't get to Kenya? Giraffes and zebras roam near this 15-tent enclave in the Sonoma wine country. Each private tent boasts hardwood floors, bathroom and king-size bed or two doubles.

  • The Veneto Room at Gingerbread Mansion Inn, Ferndale, Calif. A mural of Venice by a local artist gives guests the feeling of staying inside a piece of art. Other options at this 11-room lodging 4 1/2 hours north of San Francisco in redwood country include the palatial Empire Suite with stained-glass doors, pillars, two fireplaces and a reading nook, and the Rose Suite with flower motif and claw-foot tub near a fireplace.
  • The John Lennon Suite at Alexis Hotel, Seattle. Limited edition Lennon artwork Oh My Love and We Made Our Bed, both signed by Yoko Ono. There's a fireplace and stereo stocked with Lennon music.
  • The Dorothy Parker Suite at The Algonquin Hotel, New York. Fans of Parker's acid pen can peruse unpublished letters, memorabilia, poems and posters while sipping a decanter of sherry with a loved one (men do make passes at women with glasses, to paraphrase the author). Other suites at this refurbished literati favorite include The Hirschfeld (with drawings by the famed caricaturist) and The New Yorker (containing archival covers of this Manhattan institution). Information: 212-840-6800.
  • Snoopy Rooms and Suites at the new Radisson Resort Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, Calif. The cartoon strip that whelped him may be history, but the beloved beagle lives on in 16 rooms and suites decorated with Snoopy bedspreads, clocks, stuffed animals and shower curtains. Snoopy and the Peanuts gang frolic in murals in the halls. Information: 800-333-3333.
  • The Blues Brothers Suite at House of Blues Hotel, Chicago. One of the suits Dan Aykroyd wore in Blue Brothers 2000 is here, along with a wet bar, a dining room that seats six and an entertainment center. Information: 312-245-0333.
  • The Party Like a Rock Star Suite at Hotel Monaco, Chicago. Enter this night roost to see a TV that appears to have been thrown through a window (courtesy of the Steppenwolf Theatre prop shop). The décor, created in collaboration with radio station WXRT, also includes gold records, a video jukebox, electric guitar, concert photos and sunken Jacuzzi. Information: 800-397-7661.
